Corporate Influence on Elections-Part 2

March 30, 2010

How to Counter the Effects of the Supreme Court Decision

On January 21, 2010, in a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling to eliminate limits on corporate and union political spending.  This opens the floodgates for well-heeled corporations to have undo influence over local, state, and federal elections to further their corporate goals.

Here are some ideas for countering this threat to our government “of the People, by the People, and for the People”:

  • Pass a constitutional amendment to quit treating corporations as persons.
  • Make all political contributions by corporations completely transparent.
  • Support and protect Net Neutrality and the open internet so that “natural persons” still have access to find/share accurate, reliable information.
  • Use social networking & other internet tools to call out corporations that use excessive political contributions to thwart the will of the people.
  • Support congressional efforts to pass new laws to restore corporate campaign financing.

It may take some major national incident of corporate overreach to get enough people aware and concerned about the issue before any significant action is taken.  In the meantime, expect to see a lot more corporate influence at the state and local levels that will remain below the radar of most news organizations.
